In January 2023, Rachel adopted a tiny puppy to be her loyal companion as she explored the Ozark Mountains. She named him Bruiser after the mascot of her alma mater, Baylor University. Bruiser is only 15 lbs, but don’t be fooled by his small stature—he is always ready for big adventures! He has traveled across the country, hiked countless trails, and floated over 50 miles down the Buffalo National River. 

Bruiser loves his weeks in the field, and he can often be found asleep in someone’s lap, playing with his favorite squeaky toy, or doing tricks in hopes of earning a bite of cheese. He is very protective of “his” boys—he faithfully fulfills his duty of defending the group from intruders, by courageously barking at anyone who dares to enter camp.

In his free time, Bruiser enjoys exploring the sounds and smells of nature, riding on the front of Rachel’s kayak, and helping Rachel play disc golf by retrieving all of her lost discs.
